We’re swiftly approaching the Autumnal Equinox on the 22nd of this month which means the official end of summer and beginning of fall! The equinox represents a day of equal daylight and nighttime hours before we start losing light and gaining more darkness. Symbolically the fall represents a season for harvest and death, or rather the end of a journey to put it less morbidly. It’s also a time to check in and evaluate where you are with your goals, dreams, and intentions. As we transition into this new season, we aim to leave behind that which isn’t serving us anymore in order to make room for what is.
Fall is my favorite season for many reasons but most importantly, my last name, the cardinal direction West, is associated with the season of fall. Pretty apropos, no?! The shifts that happen in the air and the light this time of year are magical. Just like my grandmother, I find great pleasure in watching the leaves begin to change and fall from the trees. And, I now have the green light to use pumpkin and all the warm spices with reckless abandon!
Though I’ve got a special pumpkin-y recipe lined up for the eve of the actual equinox, I wanted to share a curated collection of all things autumn to help you get ready for the season ahead. You’ll find a delicious assortment of my favorite fall-inspired recipes from the blog as well as ways to prepare yourself and your home for the season. Once fall arrives and it the days grow a little cooler, I venture out on a walk to forage for bits of nature reminiscent of the season. I’ll arrange these items prominently in my space to lend a bit of inspiration and beauty. Read more about this ritual here.
{ p r e p a r i n g f o r t h e n e w s e a s o n }
+ go through your home — Donate, recycle, or get rid of anything you don’t need anymore (I tend to focus on my desk, closet, & pantry)
+ clean — I tend to do a little more of a deep clean and smudging at the beginning of a new season compared to what I do on a weekly basis. For smudging or cleansing with incense/smoke, make sure to direct it into the corners of a room as energy is prone to stagnation there.
+ organize — Find a meaningful way to arrange things in your home, especially those things that have great importance for you.
+ set intentions — Take at least a few moments to sit down, clear your head, and focus on your breath. Consider what you’d like to accomplish for the season. Write your intention down then keep it somewhere you’ll see it most days, especially if you’re a visual person.
+ decorate — Entirely optional but highly recommended. I love incorporating as many natural things into my fall decor as possible: a variety of winter squashes, especially pumpkins; pine cones; dried flowers from the spring/summer; acorns; and fall leaves.
